Probably the most unfortunate thing that ever happened to `Citizen Kane’ was that it found itself atop the AFI top film list. Now, no one can simply enjoy the film. Everyone feels compelled to scrutinize it and make a decision about its greatness. Asking whether `Citizen Kane’ is the best film of the century is like asking if Marilyn Monroe was the most beautiful woman. It depends on whom you ask.

`Citizen Kane’ is not the most entertaining film I’ve ever seen, but it is certainly one of the most important. It is a vanguard motion picture and a gargantuan achievement for Orson Welles. If you consider the fact that Welles was a 24 year old Hollywood outsider who had only done radio and theater when he landed the contract for this film, you begin to appreciate what a big deal it was. This was during a time when a few studios controlled every film that was made. How many 24 year old actor/directors can you name today, even in a world where independents abound?

The story is based on the life of William Randolph Hearst. Writer Herman Mankiewicz had an up-close look at Hearst as he had been an occasional house guest at the Hearst mansion. The similarities were striking, right down to the paramour whose career Hearst promoted, who loved to do jigsaw puzzles. The fact that this film was released at all is a marvel in itself. Hearst went on a personal campaign to crush the film and enlisted every powerful friend he had to stop it. Louis B. Mayer offered RKO $800,000 to destroy the print. John D. Rockefeller ordered the Radio City premier cancelled. All of Hearst’s newspapers were forbidden to mention the film.

Hollywood was uniformly against it and Welles was branded an insolent maverick. The film was snubbed by the Academy. It was nominated for 9 Oscars and won only best screenplay. The film turned out to be a commercial failure, losing $150,000. With all the forces stacked against it, we are lucky to be having this best film debate at all.

The story has a simple moral; that money and power can’t buy happiness. We see Kane’s progress from a happy child, to an idealistic young journalist intent on helping the common man, and finally to a bitter and angry old man whose innocence has slipped from him. One of the most effective scenes that illustrated this was the two minute overlay of breakfast conversations with his wife. It starts with cooing lovers and progresses through increasing levels of discord. It ends in silence with the two reading separate newspapers, her disdain for him subtly indicated by her choice of the hated Chronicle as her newspaper.

What is so remarkable about this film is the filmmaking. Director after director has pointed to some aspect of this film as having influenced them. The use of shadows and various perspective shots was not unprecedented in 1941, but never before had they been used with so much dramatic impact. What was unprecedented was that `Citizen Kane’ was the first film ever to depart from the strict narrative format, which moves forward chronologically. The film starts at the end and jumps around in time based upon the perspective of the person who is telling his or her story about Kane. So the next time you see a flashback, remember it started here.

The makeup was revolutionary. Welles often went through four hours or more of makeup to be properly aged for each scene. The film also launched a number of brilliant careers. Besides Welles, Joseph Cotton and Agnes Moorehead went on to long and prominent film careers.

If `Citizen Kane’ is not the best film of the century it is certainly one of them. Its influence on a generation of filmmakers cannot be ignored in the equation. People who watch this film and ask, “What’s the big deal?” are comparing it with modern films that have borrowed from this film’s techniques and undergone 60 years of evolution. It’s like going back to Kitty Hawk and saying, “What’s the big deal, the flight only lasted a few seconds.”

There is only one rating to give to a film of such monumental importance. It is the consummate 10.

This is a great DVD set for any fan of Citizen Kane… it was ranked best film of all time by AFI. It was also nominated for 9 academy awards and won for best original screenplay. This box set includes 3 discs as I have listed below…

Disk #1 – Citizen Kane (the Feature Length Film including the Movie Premiere Newsreel, Rare Production Photographs, Storyboards, and more)

Disk #2 – The Battle Over Citizen Kane (the Academy Award Nominated Feature Length Documentary detailing the bitter struggle between film director Orson Welles and newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst)

Disk #3 – RKO 281 (Golden Globe Nominee for Best Mini-Series, Best Actor, and Best Actress, this HBO drama is filled with exciting performances from some of Hollywood’s greatest stars)

In addition, this box set includes a collectible senitype with an image from the motion picture and its corresponding 35mm film frame. Plus, a 16-page commemorative booklet is included that also features images from the motion picture.

The one negative about this box set is that (although you see it in Amazon.com’s picture)… the theatrical poster is not included. I suppose this is because it would have to be folded and then would not be in good condition for framing or hanging. Therefore, they include a “free” mail-in offer to get it sent to you… the catch… there is a shipping and handling charge. I was disappointed by what I consider to be an outrageous shipping fee, especially after shelling out the $$$ to buy this set.

I still gave this set 5-stars because it is such a great movie!

TALES OF TERROR is another great collection of public domain horror movies! No, these are not digitally remastered, spotless masterpieces. These are movies that are available to any company (and there are tons of them) that wants to put them out. So, why pay 10-20 times as much for the same scratchy movies?? Here’s the run-down: THE WHITE GORILLA- An hour-long stinkfest about a guy in a white go-rilla suit in the jungle. Actually 2 movies spliced together! Pretty dull indeed! THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH- Barbera Steele is a vengeful ghost, out to fulfill her mother’s curse. Good spooker! THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE- Horribly editted pile of offal! Barely makes sense, and Erica Blanc’s infamous naked coffin dance is gone! Ugh! CONDEMNED TO LIVE- Ralph Morgan is a guy doomed to suck the life from others. A good flick! THE HEAD- Awesome german mad science spectacular about a psychotic doctor and his keeping a disembodied head alive! includes a Hunchback, strippers, and lots of bubbling chemicals! DEVIL MONSTER- Ridiculous tale of a giant man-eating manta ray on the loose. Junk! CRYPT OF THE LIVING DEAD- Andrew Prine stars as a man who must battle the queen of the vampires to help solve his father’s murder. Not bad. CHLOE, LOVE IS CALLING YOU- Absolutely stoooopid story about a voodoo lady and her attempts to stop a romance. THE PHANTOM OF SOHO- German murder mystery w/ a golden-gloved killer! Watch for the topless dancers and wacky prostitutes! THE APE MAN- Bela stars as a man who becomes part ape and sleeps w/ his go-rilla buddy! They also go on a killing spree together! Ok. THE SADIST- The only decent thing Arch Hall jr. ever did! He plays his serial-killing scumbag character like no other! A classic! A WALKING NIGHTMARE- Sorry, I fell asleep! A dark-house type mystery. NIGHT FRIGHT- John Agar is the sheriff of a small town full of 30+ year old college “kids”, who are plagued by a mutated space monkey! No, I’m serious! Good for laughs. SCARED TO DEATH- Bela and George Zucco star in this godawful piece of doggy-do about a dead woman and her telling of her traumatic life. At least there’s a midget! SOUND OF HORROR- Treasure hunters encounter an invisible beasty in a cave, saving a fortune on special effects! Watch for Ingrid Pitt’s little dance number! Ok. THE MAN W/ TWO LIVES- A rich guy dies and switches souls w/ an executed murderer. Pretty good! THE IRONBOUND VAMPIRE- A hippie-vampire haunts New Jersey. Shot on video tape ultra-cheapie w/ very little to offer. I did like the vampiric gal-pal stuff near the end though! Yowza!! HANDS OF STEEL- Terminator rip-off w/ a silly android stalked by John Saxon. Includes arm-wrestling truckers and dryer-duct hoses on car roofs! Also has a 3-second topless sequence! VAMPIRE’S NIGHT ORGY- A bus breaks down in vampiretown! Loads of bloodsuckers and cannibalism to boot! Good-O! ONE FRIGHTENED NIGHT- An old guy wills his fortune to his missing granddaughter. The other relatives are NOT pleased, especially when she just happens to reappear! Ok. THE WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON- Dean Stockwell gets hairy after a trip to Transylvania. Trouble is, he works for the president of the united states! An ok political satire. A STRANGE ADVENTURE- A young hot rod enthusiast gets mixed up w/ bank-robbers. Marla English (She Creature) is a very bad girl! THE ISLAND MONSTER- Boris Karloff is a kindly old doctor who is also a sadistic drug smuggler! Good. THE ROGUES TAVERN- Wallace Ford tries to help solve a string of murders commited by someone wearing a dog-head puppet on their hand! No kidding! Ok. TERROR CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE- barbera steele inhabits a castle built on a burial-ground for plague victims. Ickiness ensues! Watch for the zombified / mummified, severed hands! THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI- Silent classic about a string of murders that occur when a strange hypnotist and his somnambulist come to town! Excellent! EVIL BRAIN FROM OUTER SPACE- Mutants are attacking and only Starman can save us! Lots of kung-fu disco dancing! THE DEVIL BAT- Bela is a mad scientist who creates a giant bat that kills those who wear a certain shaving lotion! Good. THE BAT- Silent crime drama about the notorious BAT and his reign of terror. Very good. Watch for the early influences on Batman, years before the caped-crusader was even thought of! THE AMAZING TRANSPARENT MAN- An escaped convict is recruited by an evil army major who wants him to become transparent in order to steal nuclear material. Why? He wants to make an invisible army of course! Good. THE PHANTOM CREEPS- Bela is the nefarious Dr. Zorca, out to conquer the world in this condensed version of the 12-part serial. I actually like this better, short and sweet! CRIMES AT THE DARK HOUSE- Tod Slaughter is at his devilish best causing murder and mayhem, all while chuckling demonically! Great! THE SHE-BEAST- Barbera Steele is a young woman who disappears in a lake, only to be replaced by a centuries-old witch. You’ll never forget her shriek! Ok. THE GHOST WALKS- Another old dark house type movie. Ok. CURSE OF THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN- A movie by hippies, for hippies, about hippies being killed by the title character. Or are they? Who cares?! It’s a dreadful mess! THE CRIMES OF STEPHEN HAWKE- Tod Slaughter again! This time he’s a kindly moneylender who also happens to be an evil serial-killer called the spinebreaker! Many deaths! Great! DEVIL’S PARTNER- Ed Nelson is an old man who makes a sacrifice to satan so he can come back from the dead. Creepy and watchable. SHOCK- Vincent Price is a wife-murdering psychiatrist who is witnessed by a woman. The witness goes into shock and ends up under the good doctor’s care! Good. MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE- The absolute nadir of all film-making, yet this cinematic whale turd is addictively viewable! Who could forget Torgo or the Master? Or the whiney kid? Unbelievable! MURDER IN THE RED BARN- Tod Slaughter must kill off a poor gal in order to marry a rich lady. Can he pull it off? Good. THE MANSTER- A guy in japan is secretly given a serum that turns him into a murderous monster! Watch for the eyeball in the shoulder scene! NEVER TOO LATE- Tod Slaughter is a respectable squire who has an interesting hobby. He loves to work at the prison and torture the inmates, especially the feisty ones! Great! THE DEVIL’S MESSENGER- Lon Chaney jr. is the devil, introducing three minor tales of slight fear in this failed TV pilot. Boring, although the third story ain’t bad. TEENAGE ZOMBIES- Jerry Warren’s stale tale of teens on zombie island. Not his worst movie though. THE BOWERY AT MIDNIGHT- Bela is both a college professor, and a soup-kitchen operator who is also a crimelord! Very good! TORTURE SHIP- Lyle Talbot is on board this hokey hunk of horse poo. Scientific experiments on convicts gone awry! So-so at best. MIDNIGHT SHADOW- Horrid murder mystery w/ Amos and Andy-type “comic” relief. P.U.! THE DEVIL’S DAUGHTER- More boredom in the form of a movie! A woman from Harlem inherits a plantation in Jamaica. Oh no! Her voodoo-priestess sister is out to scare her away! Terrible! NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST- Alien invades earth by impregnating a male astronaut w/ it’s offspring. Ouch! TALES OF FRANKENSTEIN- Made-for-tv pilot for another doomed show. This one’s good. Can Dr. Frankenstein help a dying man? Perhaps, but at what cost? Good. Well, that’s it. I recommend buying this baby right now! Peace…

Spoilers: While the television show ER lost some of its finest cast members in the preceding years, including founders Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Julianna Margulies and the great Eriq LaSalle, it also gained some high calibre acting talent in the process.

Noah Wyle takes charge following the death of Mark Greene (in season eight), while Laura Innes’s Kerry Weaver (a great characterization) continues with her usual ambitious plans, facing health and moral dilemmas on the way. Maura Tierney ably continues her role as Abby Lockhart, with Goran Visnjic maintaining his rebel ways. Newcomer Mekhi Phifer receives a top billing credit for his part as Gregory Pratt and although he has his moments, Sharif Atkins takes the upper hand with his portrayal of the likable Michael Gallant. Alex Kingston, a staple of the series has little to do this season while Sherry Stringfield returns as Susan Lewis, displaying some fine moments including a nice friendship with a terminal cancer patient. Ming-Na returns as Jing-Mei Chen, turning up the heat with her relationship with Pratt.

Season nine however, is highlighted by the brilliance of the underrated Paul McCrane. McCrane’s Robert Romano faces a hard road to recovery after a devastating accident in the season opening. Though previously considered the shows ‘villain’, McCrane’s character (who previously had few redeeming features other than his brilliance as a surgeon) is fleshed out more during season nine. With a more deeply felt characterization, McCrane gets the opportunity to display some brilliant acting talent, with a mix of the poignant and a touch of his trademark satiric wit. His friendship with Alex Kingston steps up a notch, with the two sharing a great mutual respect after years of relative hostility. It is a touching friendship.

Frances Sternhagen’s Millicent Carter (John Carter’s grandmother) is also worthy of a mention. First appearing in 1997, Sternhagen contributed to some great episodes and her pairing with Wyle left some great moments in the series history. This season is also graced with the presence of some great character actors including Bruce Weitz and Don Cheadle as a doctor in training with Parkinson’s disease. On the whole, season nine is filled with solid work from all cast members and is a vast improvement over season seven and eight.

First off, it would be a lie to say the departures of Eriq La Salle and Anthony Edwards didn’t hurt the show. They did. Dr. Greene was the heart of the ER, and Dr. Benton was the heart of the OR. After they both left the show in season eight, some reinventing would clearly be needed. ER continued on brilliantly for season nine. No, it was not the same show

it had been a season before, but season eight was much different than the first season. Nine was different. It had to be. It was not awful by any means.

Season nine picks up where eight left off. The hospital is in lockdown after a smallpox scare. It turns out the infection within County General is not smallpox, but monkeypox. Everyone is vaccinated and evacuated. Everyone except Carter, Abby, Chen and Pratt. During the evacuation, Dr. Romano is involved in an accident that will change the rest of his life. That accident has time and again been hailed as one of the most shocking moments of TV history!

The rest of the season is just as excellent as the season premiere. There are guest appearances by Sally Field, Don Cheadle and Edward Asnwer, among others. There is also a memorable Christmas episode that plays in reverse (a la MEMENTO) and of course the intense 200th episode, which alternates between the day and night shifts.

This season marks a change for ER. But the change isn’t as bad as some people say. I think of season nine as the last truly CLASSIC season of ER. And while I’m still a loyal fan to this day, seasons 1-9 were the best of the best and I’ll gladly add season nine of ER to my DVD collection.

If a series can procure me to look all the epsiodes attend to support than that definetly says something. Street Fighter II V has definetly done that.

The situation unhurried Street Fighter II V is that Ryu goes to America to visit Ken. While there they gather into a fight with a group of Air Force troops. After Ryu and Ken victory they procure…handed to them by Guile. They then proceed the world to learn novel martial arts techniques and later unlock the power of the Hado. Whie traveling they wait on Chun Li, Fei Long, Sagat, Dhalsim, and eventually Guile. However they face deadly opponents such as Vega, Bison, Cammy, Zangief, and more.

The myth is surprisngly very expedient, and when an Anime series last up to 30 episodes that says something (considering most barley gain it to 10) . THe Animation is gigantic, the yarn is expansive, and this is hands down the best video game to series (anime and Live) available. Also explore for background cameos from Akuma, he appears frequently in the most current places.

When this first starts, you’re not exactly positive where it’s going to go. You’re enjoying it, but can’t declare if it’s going to regain better or unbiased kind of halt the same. What in fact happens, is Ken and Ryu fade to different parts of the world, and before you know it you’re crooked and can’t bear how advantageous it is. It contains some of the finest moments I’ve ever seen in anime, and feels like it’s going to climax to one of the most incredible final battles ever seen. After the third disk, there is only one more and you are fully pumped and ready for the waste. However, everything goes corrupt from here. The second episode on disk four has a twelve small recap, which hints at the fact that the money has urge out. Then Ryu takes about four episodes to charge his fireball which gets extremely lifeless, unlike the hasty straggle of the earlier episodes. Before you know it, you’re only two episodes away, the animation seems to have dissapeared, and the drawing style has changed. It’s not even that the style has turned crap, but the animation is crap too. While earlier on, the series had moments of extraordinary animation, the raze has terrible re-used moments, that aren’t even that capable to start with. It all feels like money is being saved for the final episode, the final fight, and although money comes aid a bit for the final one, there is so worthy re-hashing of previously seen frames that you’re unbiased completely dissapointed. It drops down in quality completely, and is nothing like you expected it to be. Plus, at the extinguish of it all, there are loose ends which are not tied up. But, if this doesn’t bother you, seeing as 22 of the 28 episodes are nothing short of sparkling, and there is a final fight at the demolish of it all which is the ending you want for Street Fighter anyway, then by all means consume it. I would consume it honest for the first 22, I fair won’t be watching the last 6 ever again.
